A new PPE: Sept. 30 panty giveaway will focus on being pretty, powerful and engaged on election day

DETROIT—Sept. 28, 2020—Smart&Sexy, Women Voters USA and Detroit-based Jackets For Jobs are partnering to increase the number of women voters on election day through a special panty giveaway. The panties, which have the message: “My vote is my voice” will be distributed Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 3-6 p.m. in Detroit during an event within the parking lot of Fellowship Chapel on the city’s northwest side. It is Smart&Sexy’s hope that the panties will help draw attention & excitement around voter registration and participation.

On Wednesday, $25 gift cards will be given to the first 500 Detroit households that drive up to the parking lot and complete the 2020 Census onsite. In addition, Jackets For Jobs will distribute the commemorative free panties, along with a flyer with Michigan voting information and voting stickers.

“These are unprecedented times and as we encourage women to continue to practice safety and protect their families during the pandemic, we also want to make sure women have an impact at the polls,” said Alison Vaughn, founder and CEO of Jackets For Jobs. “We hear so much about PPE (personal protective equipment) during the pandemic, but in this instance, we want PPE to stand for making women pretty, powerful and engaged in the electoral process. And if we can do this at the same time the Detroit NAACP, Fellowship Chapel and the City of Detroit are ensuring Detroiters are counted in the 2020 Census, we are winning on all fronts.”

Vaughn makes a case for promoting increased turnout of women voters by citing data provided by Women Voters USA. According to the organization, one out of three eligible American women voters (38 million) are unregistered (despite the fact that more women vote than men); 53 percent of chronic non-voters identify as women; and, voter turnout for women does not reflect the country’s diverse population, with Latina, Asian and younger women (ages 18-24) in general much less likely to vote than other groups.

“At Jackets For Jobs, we believe that when we empower women, we empower families and communities, so our panty giveaway is a fun, but very serious extension of that commitment,” Vaughn said. “We talk about election day, but we know that many ballots will be completed before Nov. 3. Therefore, we hope our nonpartisan activity promotes dialogue and planning for all things relating to the electoral process this year including registration deadlines, absentee ballot deadlines and the window for early voting.”

Fellowship Chapel is located at 7707 W. Outer Drive at the Southfield Freeway. For more information about Jackets For Jobs panty giveaway to encourage voter turnout on election day, please contact Alison Vaughn at avaughn@jacketsforjobs.org.
